Is social media a recent phenomenon?

Social media is not a new phenomenon, it has been there for thousands of years, even before internet was created. Simply put, it refers to “people to people network” that can carry all types of messages: starting from talking about personal choices to friends, experience about a place/product, news about family well-being, or exchange of views on anything that people like to talk about. There is purely a “social” base involving people, and it is logically dubbed as “media” because it can carry message. Who owns this media? Answer is: People. Why did or does it exist in the first place? Answer: this is because of the very nature of human being to keep in touch with each other. Therefore, the existence of social media can be traced back to the genetic composition of human beings! It was there, it is there, and it will be there in ages to come. The only difference between current status of social media (as popularly synonymous today to facebook, twitter etc.) and the social media that existed in the stone age ( or even better, in the previous decade) is that, it is now faster, cheaper, and with more tweaks & options due to integration of technology. Integration of technology can be compared to the “killer” instinct that every human/animal has inside itself. When technology was not available, people used to kill people/animal by using bows and arrows. With the advent of technology, people are using rifles/machine guns to serve the same purpose. There is no change in “killer” instinct, only the form of attack has changed due to technology.

Same applies to social media. In old days, people used to get together around festivals, fairs, personal visits etc. to share their stories. With the advent of technology, the same instinct has been exposed through these tech-based social media platforms. It turns out that, to understand the social media and extract the best results out of it, it is imperative to understand the basics of human behavior and motivation in more depth than we used to understand before technology was integrated into it.
