Are you writing at the centre or the margin?

Assume your world as a piece of paper, where you keep writing things that you believe, do, and sustain over time. When it comes to business strategy, this is where you write your goals, strategies and outcomes in a competitive market scenario. Lot of businesses will write their core strategies at the centre, and then gradually expand that out towards margin of the paper – meaning practicing these strategies in reality, emanating from their core priorities at the centre. Apple could be an example of this centre to margin practice, leading to consistent brand image and market share.

Many others would do the opposite. They learn the hard way – starting from the margin, only to figure out later that they started from the wrong point. By the time they reach the centre, they find a void that was needed to be filled-in much earlier. US banking system could be an example, where too much of sub-prime mortgages lead to an elongated recession for the whole economy!

Today, refresh your thinking about the centre of your page. Is this filled well with priorities in your life? Do you like to refill this sometime later only after making expensive mistakes at margins? For businesses, thinking of the centre first will surely enhance your future efficiency. Let us think again.
